Corporate Offices, GM Building, New York City
After my graduation from Columbia I was offered a position at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP [SOM] in their New York City interior design department, at that time on 42nd Street in the Daily News Building with the wonderful rotating ‘world’s largest indoor globe’ in the lobby.
My first project assignment was to generate a design concept for the corporate offices of General Motors in Midtown Manhattan. To counter the standard 5’-0” corridors often found within New York City high rise office buildings I sought to reconsider the hallways as multipurpose spaces. The reception desk and conference tables were my first gos at designing custom furniture.
My time at SOM was a wonderful opportunity to work with an architecture firm I'd studied in school, working on projects for companies I’d long been aware of.
I'm grateful for my experience there.
